For attacker/defender games like assault, I think having a class that can break stalemates in well-defended positions would make gameplay better.

So I propose a class that has a mortar which can shoot over walls, with the tradeoff that his mortar tube is very slow firing, only has a few rounds of ammo, the round travels slowly, and his only other weapon is a pistol and maybe a knife so that he isn't completely useless after running out of mortars.

Basically this class would have to be heavily nerfed so as not to be OP. But it would just be a class you switch to to break stalemates and flush out campers.

Thoughts?

Sounds like the mortarman can be used to force the other team to evacuate a camp spot

That kinda sounds like the scout class that got removed during beta? Devs could bring that back since we have enough counters for it right now. I like the idea of flushing out camping players. We could also have a new chemical grenade that creates toxic gas to periodically drain hp (and disable abilities like healing). It's not a new idea but I feel like it would level the playing field when players can't push a position.

Scout was much more fast paced compared to this idea. Scout was an offensive/defensive class, and this class is proposed as to just take out camping spots. Scout was definitely not limited to that.

The chemical thing you mentioned sounds similar to Specialist, which had a poison dart and corrosive acid rifle.

Oh yea, forgot about that class. Specialist would be dope if it still existed. I love the idea of a fragile, one shot kill weapon with delayed damage. Provides good counterplay adds tactical variety to the game. Might be a bit unfair in free for alls though.

We could (the more classes the merrier) but I would make sure to add a "classic" game mode where the original classes minus commander can be played for nostalgia's sake.

That sounds like a bad idea to me, it would split up the community and we wouldn’t have good games going on.

We can't build the game around the current state of there not being many players. It won't be like this forever.

Now that I think about it, it's actually quite hard to deter camping in a team-based shooter kind of game, especially when half of the classes are designed to camp.

@Alex

I think the problem is that the lack of players already makes it hard to get more than four people into a game as is. Adding a "Nostalgia Mode" sounds cool, but don't you think you ought to at least wait until the game is big enough that you can reliably log on and have more than two other people playing before splitting up the player base?

I cant add a new class anyways until after we’ve already started advertising and most likely a bit after that as well because I find fair gameplay, lag, and hack patching most important although thats debatable depending at where we are at that point.
